Monopoly Holiday Hotline

Much like family Monopoly games in the US, disputes arise in the UK as well.  Hasbro's United Kingdom and Ireland division has set up a hotline to take care of those disagreements this holiday season.

source
It's almost impossible to play the board game without someone getting upset and throwing a fit.  Most games end with someone losing their temper and flipping the board over.  Fortunately there are some dedicated individuals who will help cool the family fires these next few days.  So before you toss the Terrier across the room, give Hasbro a call. It'll be alright.

Winter Solstice

Today is one of the best days of the year...

The first official day of Winter, which means....the shortest day of the year, which means...the days will get longer!

Lanius Family Donations

Yesterday morning, Jameson Camp received an early set of Christmas presents from Rachel Lanius and her family.  With her 2 sons and her mother, they donated many camp good including hygiene items, camping equipment, and even lifeguard rescue tubes.

Rachel said that her family got together and agreed they wouldn't buy each other Christmas gifts, but instead they would all chip in and donate items to children in need.

They are a wonderful family and it's people like them that keep the spirit of Christmas alive and well.  Thank you for your gifts and know that you have greatly impacted the lives of those who are less fortunate.

MERRY CHRISTMAS!

Happy Birthday, Coldilocks

A fitting story for today's frigid temps...

COLDILOCKS THE POLAR BEAR
source

The oldest (but not the coldest) polar bear in the US celebrated her 36th birthday on Friday.  She lives at the Philadelphia Zoo. Last year her partner Klondike died at the age of 34.  They were romantically involved and he was her common-law husband (I assume).

National Chocolate-Covered Anything Day

For all you chocoholics out there, today is a very special day!

source
There are some who would say you could cover anything with chocolate and it would taste good. Strawberries, bananas, pecans, marshmallows, chihuahuas...the list goes on and on.

So indulge yourself today and enjoy that cocoa!

Carlin Goes to Breakfast

Yvonne brought in these antlers for Brad's dog, Chance, but I'm not sure Carlin will let them go.  They fit his little pug-head perfectly.

Also, Carlin joined us (Yvonne, Brad, Erin, & me) for breakfast today.  He helped me with these strawberry-banana split pancakes...

Before heading back outside, Yvonne made sure he was bundled up with this nice scarf...

After breakfast, we were all smiles (obviously, since we just ate)...

New Interns

I am pleased to announce that Yvonne has hired 2 new interns for the Development Team.  I am even more pleased to announce that these 2 interns are women.  Both of them are students at IUPUI and they will start here after the New Year.

They will not be able to replace Caitlin but at least they can offer some companionship in the VISTA office.  I had been getting very lonely in here.  This was rock bottom for me:

I'm recovering slowly, but I believe I'll make it.  Thank you for all the well wishes.  Most importantly, thank you, Yvonne, for at last giving me human interaction.  I was beginning to feel like Tom Hanks talking to Wilson the Volleyball in Cast Away.  I'm excited for the New Year but I hope I don't get overzealous with these girls.  I've been used to playing with Carlin and tickling his belly.  I'm not sure I'll be able to do that with the interns.

Snow Day

When the powder finally settled, Jameson Camp received about 5-6 inches of snow yesterday.  Here is a play-by-play of the winter wonderland as it occurred:

The humans enjoyed the snow but perhaps the Jameson Camp member who had the most fun was Carlin...

He also met this wonderful snow-woman who is now his girlfriend.  Her name is Darlin.

Who turned off the Christmas lights in Boston?

I'll give you a hint...squirrels.

source
Those cute little bushy-tailed bandits are at it again.  First they stole some Easter eggs...

source
Then they took bird food...

source
Now it's Christmas lights.  But they didn't turn off the lights as an order from the Grinch.  Instead, those quick little ninjas have other (bigger) plans.  According to a parks department spokesman, the squirrels appear to have "a fondness for copper."

The past few years there have been many reports of stolen copper from cities across the US, particularly in Detroit.  I think these little gray-coated gangsters are a lot more clever than we realize.  This face sums it all up...

I'm sure all of you are getting one of these in the mail, but I just wanted to give you a sneak preview. What a beautiful family!

First Snow at Jameson Camp

It's absolutely beautiful here at Jameson.  And it will only get prettier in the coming weeks.  I am fortunate enough to have the best view of camp...

Welcome, New Readers

Yesterday, Jameson Camp hosted the 2016 American Camp Association Winter Gathering.

People from all over attended the event; Indiana was well represented as were other Midwestern states.  I even met one guy who was out of this world.  Actually that was me.

This exercise was one of their ice-breakers.  From looking at the photo,  I think it should be called a 'back-breaker.'

Before lunch, Yvonne, Erin, and myself hosted a round-table discussion about marketing.  I took a photo but Yvonne would probably attack me with a fire poker if I posted it.  You have to be careful with posting photos of women; if the light doesn't hit them perfectly, they'll hate it.

I did pass along this blogspot to a few 'interested' parties at the event. 'Interested' in the sense that they quickly grabbed papers so they could leave our table and get out of town.

So if there are any new readers...welcome.  The blog is light-hearted with very little intelligent content.  Just like its writer.

The Marketing Men

Yesterday these guys stopped by Jameson Camp for a marketing meeting:

The top photo is of Jon Picket, a local marketing consultant. The bottom photo is of some guy from Criminal Minds.

(Checks photos)

Whoops.  This is actually the guy that stopped by:

source
His name is Rick Dunkle and he is a former writer on the show. Jon and Rick toured the camp and they pitched out a few marketing ideas for Jameson. They're both great guys and hopefully we'll see them again soon. Thanks for stopping by!

You Know It's Winter When...

Hawaii is expected to get 3 feet of snow.

source

To be fair, the mountain peak it will fall on is 14,000 feet in the sky.  But still!  This is a state with the best weather in the United States.  You can wear shorts and a t-shirt all year.  Or you could wear no shorts and no shirt and you would still be comfortable!

19 Ladies and Counting

TLC.  Destiny’s Child.  The Powerpuff Girls.  These are just a few of the all-female groups that have taken the world by storm.  The Jameson Camp Women’s Auxiliary (JCWA) is perhaps another that should be included with those legendary ladies.

The JCWA was founded on July 1, 1985 by Mrs. Evelyn Wolter.  The group of women helped Jameson Camp in many facets including fundraising.  They were primarily responsible for raising the $3,000 used to purchase this camp van from Palmer Dodge in 1994:
October 1994 - The Bradmobile
Driving the van was an adventure according to longtime staff member Brad Higgins, but as he said, “It was better than nothing.”  Jameson was able to get about 2,000 miles out of the van before repairs exceeded camp’s ability to pay for them. Unfortunately, the Women’s Auxiliary itself faced a similar fate as it ran its course over the years and eventually disbanded.

Fast forward almost two decades and the JCWA was re-founded in September 2013 by Co-Chair Leslie Concannon and Development Director Yvonne Matlock.

Leslie & Yvonne
Their basic intent was to create a normal group of volunteers that could provide donations and similar functions.  That didn’t work, however, because Leslie isn’t basic and Yvonne isn’t normal.  The JCWA soon branched out as a method of extending Jameson Camp’s community outreach initiatives.  Before long, the ladies were involved in fundraising efforts and special volunteer projects that helped camp events.  Leslie and Yvonne recruited new members and one of their first recruits, Cathy Lee, has personally brought in over $40,000 in donation and sponsorship support since joining the Auxiliary (imagine if they had recruited Hoda Kotb as well). WA and newly appointed Jameson board member Kathy Spangler has also raised more than $16,500.  The group has continued to grow the past few years and currently contains 19 members.

Preparing flower decorations for the October 2016 BFG
There are many Jameson Camp promotional events throughout the year, and the JCWA plays a vital role in each one.  Whether they’re setting up tables at the May Breakfast, making crafts with summer campers, or preparing baskets for the Casino Nite / BFG, these women have put in countless hours behind-the-scenes.  If you’ve ever been to a JC event and you noticed how nice it looked, Jameson Camp has its Women’s Auxiliary to thank for that.  The JCWA makes it all look so easy, but the sheer amount of money they’ve raised speaks to their hard work and dedication to fundraising, volunteering, and supporting the children of Jameson Camp.

Since the group began, WA members have helped secure an estimated total of over $135,000 in support to include: sponsorships for the May Breakfast and/or Casino Nite, grants, Casino Nite silent auction, and contributions of in-kind, monetary donations from members and their friends, family and/or co-workers. This doesn’t even include the money they’ve saved camp via volunteering.  In 2016, the JCWA logged 344.5 total volunteer hours.  With the estimated cost of $20 per volunteer hour, that’s another $6,890.

WA members also help every week of the summer by making crafts with campers (this includes every step, i.e. planning the activity, purchasing or donating the supplies, and volunteering to lead the craft project with the kids). This has helped take the load off a very grateful Program Director Tim Nowak and his summer camp staff.  “For the past few summers, the Auxiliary has been able to plan, create, and facilitate Art Expressions activities on a weekly basis,” he says.  “Their work with Summer Camp provides a unique opportunity to offer our campers carefully and intentionally planned activities that result in beautiful products the camper can take home with them.”

WA members have helped sponsor the Youth Leaders’ Spring Service Trip since 2014 by hosting fundraisers to include: “Painting With a Twist” and the upcoming “Board & Brush.”  They’ve also included mini-fundraisers at these 2 events such as “mystery bags” or “clutch bags” handmade by the co-chairs. “They have taken our Spring Service Trip and made it their goal to ensure that, year to year, the trip has the funds needed to be possible,” says Tim.  “The Auxiliary is the glue helping us to ‘keep it together’ in some of our programs.”

Karen Midkiff a.k.a. "The Bag Lady"
To gather ideas and plan for the next event, the JCWA will hold meetings, often at a member’s house. These gatherings are strictly work-related; there is no fun at all and the gossip is kept to a minimum. So what takes places at a typical meeting?

Lacey Dabelow: “Just lots of laughter.”
Jo VanTreese: “A lot of fun and laughs.”
Yvonne Matlock: “We laugh so hard my stomach hurts.”
Anita Hubley: “There is always laughter.”

One can only imagine what the ladies are laughing at, but when it’s time to leave, they’ll have completed their tasks.  “The collective talents of this group are a perfect recipe for success,” Yvonne says.  Professionals, retired empty-nesters, and stay-at-home moms make up the JCWA, and most of them joined for the same reason: to help the kids.  “Everyone needs to have the opportunity to discover their strengths and develop their skills,” says Ariane Cagle, Content Cre8ive owner and one of the original members of the JCWA.  “Jameson Camp provides these kids with an encouraging environment where they can learn new things, gain greater confidence in their abilities, and develop self-respect.”

It’s easy to take for granted the work and time put forth by volunteers, but Yvonne wants to make sure the JCWA members are appreciated.  “I have the upmost love, admiration and respect for each of the women in our Auxiliary,” she said.  “They’ve volunteered hundreds of dollars of their own money and hundreds of hours of their time and talent.  I feel a special and unique bond with each of these women and am so in debt to all of them for the many things they do to support me in my role as the Development Director and Jameson Camp youth, often behind-the-scenes and without public recognition.”  Tim’s thoughts echo the feelings of everyone at camp: “The Women’s Auxiliary is a wonderful resource and an essential piece of the Jameson Camp puzzle. This group embodies what we mean when we say our ‘camp family’!”

Lady Olivia of Jameson Camp

First, there was the cute puppy dog, Sir Isaac.  Now, we have a human puppy on our hands.

Jameson Camp is proud to welcome the first official Camp Baby, Olivia Clemons.  She was born yesterday around 12:30 am.

She weighed 6 lbs., 10 oz. and she was 20 inches long.  I don't know how they do it, but babies always come out with a full head of hair.

There they are...Mom and her baby g look great!  We're glad to have had Stephany for a few months and we wish her young family the best!
